The Gifted and Talented Program at NEW Academy Canoga Park offers differentiated instruction in the areas of science, math, English language arts, social science and the arts. The curriculum units are aligned with the state and common core standards and allow for in depth critical thinking and productive questioning. Our class time has the intense focus on developing the 4 C’s; Creativity, Communication, Collaboration and Critical thinking. The group meets once a week after school from 2:50pm – 4:00pm.

In the fall of 2017, the students will begin the year with developing their critical thinking and problem solving skills with our kick-off invention unit. This unit is based on NGSS Engineering Design ETS1 and 5-PS2 Motion and Stability: Forces and Interactions. In the initial ‘Egg Drop’ activity, they will be inventing a contraption that will be protecting a raw egg. After a series of lessons on gravity, falling objects, and air resistance, students will incorporate the knowledge gained from these lessons to build their egg drop contraption.

The next unit will focus on life science. Students will have inquiry lessons on the body systems and how they are function independently and interdependently. We base our lessons and reflections on the NGSS for 5th, 6th and 7th grades.

We are holding an informational meeting on October 19th, 2017 at 4:30pm6:00pm in Room 106. You are able to go to eChoices.Lausd.net to fill out the Magnet Application. Please come to the meeting to get the additional paperowork needed to complete your application.
